About the Artist Margaret Babcock

I have always had and interest in art. Growing up outside of Washington D.C. allowed me to spend my time skipping school at the Smithsonian and the National Gallery of Art. In taking classes at Penn State, I found that I was much more interested in the 3-dimentional arts than to drawing and the 2-dimentional arts. Fooling around with all kinds of 3-dimentional arts and crafts, it wasn't until about 18 years ago that I ran into clay and found the addiction of my life. Realizing that ceramics was the thing that made my day worth getting up for, I made arrangements in my life to become a "Starving Artist" and have been deliriously happy ever since.

In my work I use a lot of texture with an emphasis on leaves. Many of my hand built pieces have the print of a leaf (I write the type on the back). Most of my work is functional, fired to Cone 6 (2150 degrees) dinnerware safe. I do also make "Peaceful People" jars (my reaction to Sept. 11) which are Raku fired.
